NAVIGATING THE SOCIAL MEDIA PLAYGROUND

RULE NUMBER ONE

This is social. Not business. You can’t behave in quite the same way as you would normally when marketing your business. There are social rules, etiquette and certain ways that you need to behave if you want to be successful.

RULE NUMBER TWO

Don’t sell, sell, sell. You’re boring me. I’m fed up of seeing you in my news feed and now I’m going to unfollow, unlike, or the worst possible act – hide you from my newsfeed. Why is this the worst act? It’s because you think I’m still seeing you, you are still smiling at the number of people who are following or liking your page, but what you don’t realise is that I, and many others, are not seeing you at all.

RULE NUMBER THREE

Enjoy yourself. Don’t just try to get as many friends and fans as you can – make friends, follow others and not just strategic allies, but genuine human beings. That’s what social is all about and if you’re just in it for yourself, we will see through you.

SO HOW CAN I GET WHAT I WANT FROM SOCIAL AND STILL AVOID THESE SOCIAL FAUX PAS?

Seems like a lot of effort for an uncertain amount of return doesn’t it? It’s not. It’s actually very measurable and even if you have broken any of these rules, it’s not that you’ve abjectly failed. This is just going to help you be the most interesting person at the party. Because that’s what it is. A party.

TIP NUMBER ONE

Know when to be the life and soul of the party. You can’t always be the comedian, the musician or the poet. Sometimes you’ve got to be part of the crowd. Share others’ content, like it and comment on it. Simple little activities like this make you part of the gang and show you’re listening as well as talking.

TIP NUMBER TWO

Well, it’s actually a rule – the rule of thirds. This is about push and pull. You can use this as a guide and split your content into ask (pull), tell (push and pull) and sell (push). This way, you’re not just talking about yourself all the time, what you do, what you want people to do for you and thinly veiled attempts at being interesting. You will actually be of use, be interested – as well as interesting – and still sell and grow.

TIP NUMBER THREE

People are your best sales team. There are some incredibly interesting, funny, wise and well connected people out there. We call them influencers. They post something and everyone takes notice. They like, comment and share. Imagine if they were doing that for you? By doing some of the activity described above, you could engage with these people and their audience temporarily becomes your audience. You can’t just expect them to be your friend and share your content immediately; it takes a bit of nurturing. Approach them as you would in a bar or at a party – ‘woo them’.

So now you’re all geared up, it’s time to plan your new and improved content, test the timing, start building those relationships and become the most interesting person at the social media party.
